My name is Helen Worrall. I’m a freelance artist based in the UK.

I produce oil paintings created from photographic source material. I like to subtract elements of a photograph (composition, depth, perspective, the way a subject can be altered) and then convert the image using the techniques of painting. Abstraction of a picture can occur through this process. I focus a great deal on the texture of a painting, allowing the smoothness of the painting’s surface to work with the image or subject matter itself. When I work from a photograph I tend to dissect the image and so my paintings have many layers to them.

I am currently working on a series of ‘Venice’ pieces using a collection of old holiday snaps taken in the 1970s as my source material. I enjoy working from dated photographs as they tend to possess intriguing textures and abstractions that do not exist in modern day photography.

I also paint on commission. I like to work from customers personal photographs and create for them a unique and sentimental piece which they can cherish.
